I have a gravel tank that had originally 2 snails. These things are like rabbits. So I want to clean the gravel out some but I dont want to suck any of the little guys up. I know the snails are eating some of the crap in the gravel, will that be good enough? I havent done any tests yet. Some are so tiny they are hard to see.
Why are you worried about sucking them up? I clean the gravel on my tank regularly, and seldom find many snails in the old-water tub. And, honestly, not cleaning the substrate will promote a lot more snails--they reproduce based on the available food. Too many snails = too much food available in the tank.
My 10 gallon has some snails in it and I use a regular gravel vac to clean it weekly. I notice that for the most part, even very small snails don't get sucked all the way up. They kinda float midway up the gravel vac tube... If I see them get too high, I stop the suction and let them fall back into the tank. I've also seen the snails stick firmly to the piece of gravel that they're on and just fall back into the tank.
I'd say just try a normal gravel vac and see what happens! I may have sucked up one or two of the little guys, but it doesn't seem to have affected their moral to keep multiplying!
OK cool, I havnet graveled them yet since I have noticed them in there but now its getting dirty and time. I just wanted to make sure before I go sucking them up lol.
