Unfortunately for me, my large angelfish just died. I'm a little depressed because I've had him since he was about nickel sized. He was about 3 yrs old. I'm not sure if that's a normal lifespan for an angelfish or not. An upside down cat in the tank is also dead all of a sudden so I'm going to have to run tests on the water to see if I can figure out what the problem is.

What's the best way to dispose of a fish this big? He's full grown so he's obviously pretty good sized and way, way too big to just flush.

bury it in the backyard?

I've kept them in the freezer until the day the garbage truck comes. I get a bag with ice cubes, put the dead fish in and then wrap it in another bag, tightly sealed.

Not a good idea. Where I am it's about 20 degrees outside and the ground is frozen solid. Plus, I don't want the neighborhood dogs and cats digging him up.

Agree with the above. If you dont have a yard, you can just wrap it up in a plastic bag and throw it in a dumpster(obviously, dont put it in your garbage in the house unless you like the smell of rotting fish  ). On a side note, you shouldnt be flushing any fish. This practice can introduce parasites to your local waterways, that could be devistating to the wildlife there ;)

Oh yeah i forgot about that. :duh:

I'd probably be tempted to cut it up into pieces and feed it to my turtles (waste not want not) but thats not a solution for everyone.

You could just freeze your fish, wait for summer and bury it deep. A large rock would suffice to keep the animals at bay.

Depends on how you feel about your fish. If you are depressed as you say, you obviously cared about him. Perhaps you may feel that just throwing him away is rather callous.

If I have a fish die, I just take it to the outside garbage. That way my house doesnt stink and they arent in my freezer. Sorry if it sounds harsh, but hey, what does the fish care ya know?

Well I have always wrapped them up as everyone above suggests, but this got me thinking, from Roan Art:

Well, yes I do feel callous about it since I do love my fish, but I am always telling my wife to have me cremated when I die since the shell will be dead and it's useless to bury my phosphates where plants cannot get them, and then there's the preservatives they pump you up with.

So here's here's what I am thinking, using the weber, stacking up quite a few sticks of oak and juniper and having a pyre, after all that is how I would rather be creamted, out under the sky. Yeah silly maybe, but a loved one is worth it. If, God forbid, Bucky, Satchel, Grimmy or Attila should pass on from this world, I think I will try the pyre.
