How to filter a paludarium

great start. i like prototype 1

Thanks.. I think I will keep it as is for a bit at least until I get a great idea for the "type 2" Fred the Crab seems to like it. :)

something that may help with sand getting anaerobic gas buildup may be Malaysian Trumpet Snails. I use them in my planted tanks as they burrow through the substrate. I still try to poke every now and then... but I feel like they help.

Can't wait to see how this goes along. I like it so far! (even if it isn't the final design, you have taken about 100 more steps than I have on my well intentioned 'vapor' tanks)

For my brackish tank, I have a log like that one poking up out of the water, and a piece of cork bark attached at the top with a bent up paper clip. It's free floating on the surface of the wtaer, and one of the Red Clawed crabs I have has made a burrow in the cork bark!

The problem comes when the paperclip rusts, or when it drifts free of the log that it's anchored to, then I have a stranded crab. ;)

I wish I had pics, but it was hard enough getting film in my camera just to take pics of the Aiptasia in my nano reef tank. :(

Question... Are rocks, as in "flag staff" rocks, against the sides of the glass a bad thing? My idea was to get some flat slate type rocks and make a "mountain" but this would require rocks against the side of the tank. I assume thats bad. Other idea is a peice of 2" PVC with the large flat rock fixed to the top with the sand on top. THis would make the whole thing removable. This would be ideal! Just don't know how I would get the "Wall" to stay... Any idea?

have a look in the freshwater DIY section and look at the post 'DIY Slate wall'. I think that will help you.
If you put the sand behind the rock wall it would give you partly saturated sand that mellowvision said is best for the crabs to burrow in..
also note how he glues the rock to foam to protect the tank.

the only problem I see is cleaning the glass. otherwise, no big deal.

the crabs seem to like algae build up anyway... in my 20, when it was a crabitat, the crabs would actually dip their worms in algae before eating. yes, I'm serious. it was like watching someone at a party dip in the guacamole.

OK Well I got it!!! Now you guys just have to wait about two days to see it. When I am done, it will be worth the wait ( I hope.. It could turn out like crap we'll see)

OK Well this wasn't as time consuming as I expected. What I did was I took some of that foam that they pack electronic equipment in, you know that rigid white not styo but more of a plastic foam, Anyway I took it and glassed it over with epoxy glass. Then I poured a crap load of sand over the whole thing to make a "rocky" appearance. Tomorrow I will get a piece of slate and put it on the top and cover it about three inches with sand. Then I will be done! What do you think?

you're off to a great start.....as for filtration, I suggest a small sponge filter.

They're really cheap and can run off an airpump.
