How to keep live plants

Thanks all. My point is, plants are alot easier to keep than most people think (or I thought).

I'm about the laziest out there. Get them, plant them, turn lights on & off, occasionally dump in a capful of this or that... voila!

I had a 40 and my plants went nowhere. Nice tank.

That is exactly what I am looking for.But what does wpg mean???? Also...when planting guppy grass, anacharis and java moss, what is a capful of this....or that????

Sorry Morb... wpg is Watts per gallon. typical advice is 2 -3 wpg for low to moderate light plants, 4-5 for higher light plants. "Planting" may be a bad term for some plants... anacharis and Guppy grass will grow floating or planted into the substrate. Java moss will grow anywhere it's held stable. By capful of this or that, I was referring to adding Flourish and Flourish Excel. I'm bad about keeping a schedule with them, but try to remember once a week or so.

Thanx Hooked.By the way your tank is beautiful!!!!So I would like to plant everything you have in your tank..where can I find flourish and flourish excel.Oh I also have a s@#!%%$#@ load of ramshorn snails...will they be a problem to the plants??

Thanks! The Ramshorns should only feed on decaying plants, not live ones so they shouldn't be a problem. What's your feeding regimen? Usually snail populations will only explode when the tank is overfed. I've never kept a Bichir, but I'm surprised that it's not getting fat on snails... I know my loaches make quick work of them! Flourish & Excel should be available at any Petsmart or LFS (Local Fish Store). If you can't find them in your area, check out www.bigalsonline.com.

The Bichir is only a juve....didn't know they ate snails tho....but I feed every other day.. for the tetras and gouramis, what they can eat in a about 3 mins. The pleco gets a zucchini slice once a week and an algae wafer every other night. The bichir has to fight for food since he is slow moving so I have to feed him more often...but I purposely put rams horns in my tank to help keep it clean. But I will got to petsmart tomorrow and pick up what I need. Can I plant them all @ once...or do I have to plant 1 @ a time? And does Gh Kh and Ph factor into the equation? on the apc site there was a link to a site that said keeping them in balance is essential.

I don't know if Bichirs eat snails...

Sounds like your feeding isn't over board, but maybe consider smaler feedings more frequently.

As far as plants go, you can add as many as you like at once. Be careful though, some plants sold aren't truly 100% aquatic. If you're going to PM, stick with anacharis and wisteria which are usually stocked. Otherwise, check out the classifieds here. Alot of folks have extra plants for sale (Mgamer got me started).

Thanx! But what is that puffy ball like plant in the corner? Is it java or guppy grass? That is the type of plant I'm looking for...something the bichir and gouramis can frequently take refuge in...and by pm you mean evening?Sorry if it's a stupid question...not up on the plant lingo lol.Where can I got to look @ different types of plants?

That is Java moss which grows like mad. By PM, I meant PetsMart. Sorry... getting late and lazy. lol

Check out the Plant forums here, there are alot of folks there that know alot more than I do.

And don't sweat "stupid" questions... we've all asked them. :)
