so i am feeding them algae wafers but i dont really ever see them eat. my cory cats seen to get to the wafters before the ottos even realize it is there. how can i be sure my ottos are eating?

I just bought 4 ottos so I've been reading up on it. You can hang a piece of lettuce or other veggie from a clip and otos should gather to it. Many sites also recommend blanching them in water, depending on what you're using. Another way is to put some pots/slate outside or under lots of light until algae grows on it. My otos seem to loving the green algae.

i have tried feeding both during the day and at night. ammonia is 0 nitrite 0, ph 7.4. its a planted tank with a pretty good amount of plants in it. i see the ottos going from plant to plant like they are looking for food, but there isn;t any algae in the tank that i see. i am just worried the ottos arent getting to the wafers before the corries devour them.

I'd feed them just right after I turn off the lights in the evenings, making sure that I put some food for them in an area AWAY from the corydoras....

yea i tried that. the cories always seem to find it. i put the wafer in a crevice on my drift wood, about 5 inches off the bottom, corries still got to it. lol

Are the otos bellies nice and round? If they look to be in good condition, I think its safe to say they are eating. You could try doing an algae culture for them if they do not appear to be well fed.

:iagree:I have had 4 otos in my tank for about 6 months, and I almost never see them eat. There are 2 of them that I sometimes see working on the algae on the glass and plants, the other 2 I pretty much never see and honestly thought they were dead for months until one day I saw all 4. I feed algae wafers and zucchini, never seen them touch either, though they might while I'm not watching. However they all have fat, round bellies, so they must be getting enough food somewhere.
