How to orient my clam

Hi there,
I have a clam that is attached to a chunk of red sponge. I'm trying to figure the best way to orient him. Confusing because I thought the sponge would prefer a dimmer area and the clam a brighter one sooo...

Should the split in the clam be vertical or horizontal?

That's a good question. I don't know. I looked in an invert book and honestly couldn't tell.

He is about half the size of a tennis ball. He does not have scalloped edges like those I've seen in lots of pics. He only opens maybe 1/2 an inch...never farther and he has no colored lining that comes out of his shell so far. He could still be acclimating I guess.

Since this post, I removed the attached sponge because every pic I found had them on their back with openings pointed straight up so that is how he is positioned now. In the substrate under direct lighting with decent flow.

Any suggestions?
