Yeah Ianne most people say it sick-lids....don't really read it how it sounds. Most people on this agree that it is sick-lids

Sick-lid is how it's spelt. The convention with scientific names is to pronounce according to the language you speak (in English "ch" in scientific names = "k" rather than "ch" as it does in other words of classical origin (chorus, choir, charisma etc.)). Hence "sick-lid". Italians probably say "chic-lid".

Now here is my problem, I was always brought up believing that the plural of fish was fish!!!!!

Fish has two plurals - fish and fishes. They have slightly different uses but are largely interchangeable.
