The mature males have the long dorsal fin as you have heard, whereas the mature female does not. The trouble with telling the difference is that juvenilles all tend to look like females.
I've been keeping my eye out for a female Mandarin for awhile, but sadly the LFS tends to get in either mature males or juvenilles that are too young to tell the difference and I dare not risk that.
