How to stock a 75 gallon tank and it be 'active'

Well..for sure I want to put the male betta in, but a friend of mind said he tried to put some barbs in and they were too nippy with his betta who is one of those mellow kind.

This was the list I came up with.
Cherry barbs
Harlequin Rosebaro
Cory cats
then the male betta

So I don't really want to take the chance of a nippy fish in my tank with the male betta so what could I replace the barbs with are still small and will school like them.
 
Well the betta will be fairly expensive if I order the one on aquabid, so I wanted to make sure that none of the fish will nip at his fins.

Either way, if something happens that I can't get cherry bars or the harlequin rosebaro what other top swimmers could I get?
