I have some wood that came out of a river like a year ago and I was wondering how to tell if it was hardwood and safe to boil/ soak and put in my aquarium?

I would think if you boil it for 30 minutes or so, it would be fine. I have never had any issues with wood I have boiled. Good luck.

Boiling it kills bad things. How soft is it when you press a thumb nail into it, even when wet/soaked...if it leaves a nail print, I would pass it by, even if though this test is more towards rot vice soft/hard wood.

Agreed. Boiling it kills off everything you don't want getting in your tank. If the wood is soft, i.e. nail test, I wouldn't put it in there.
