how to work out tank volume

Google "Aquarium Calculator" and use one of the dozens of sites that comes up?

No need, once you go to google your already there.

Google will do math and scientific functions, as well as conversions.

Just type in something like

48 x 18 x 20 cubic inches in gallons

or if you have inch measurements but want liter results then type in

48 x 18 x 20 cubic inches in liters

'in' is the operator that lets google know it has to express the answer 'in' a different unit.

It can do any combination, like

120 x 45 x 50 cc in imperial gallons

it can handle abbreviations as well, like above I said cc which is cubic centimeters. It will recognize cu in, gal, etc

And while your there you can do other things, like

24 celsius in f

One of the sites I found will calculate all sorts of stuff Google won't...you have to put in tank size, wall size, type and depth of substrate, desired tank temperature and ambient room temperature and it'll calculate all sorts of stuff, including total tank volume, water volume (after substrate), and how many watts you'll need to heat/chill the tank...among other things...
