How would you stock this tank?

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That being said, they said I could take it over :) I got more details on it and got to see what they had as far as supplies. They have food (flake and pellets) a heater (a not very good one, 50w, and it's the clamp-on-the-side kind) and some water conditioner...

So here's one the major humps. When no one is at the library, they turn off the heat (or turn it down at least) So there could be some big fluctuations in water temperature. And the temp would change a lot over night (and the crappy heater couldn't keep up with it.) I'm a fan of stelth heaters, so here's what I'm thinking. Would a 100w stealth heater be good for this tank? I know it's a bit 'over-kill' but which the tempature dropping so much, I think it would be a good thing. Or would you go with an even higher?

I'm going to take ALL water out of the tank and clean the filter and start it fresh... and rinse the heck out of the gravel (or just get some new gravel.)

I got an official letter from the head librarian about how I have been giving the authority to do this project. I'm going to go to some LFS and see if one will donate items, in trade for a plaque on the tank :headbang2:

So, hopefully they will, and we can get some good stuff :) I'm going to try and get a nice compact florescent hood if I can. Grow some hair grass, Anubis, make a couple small swords or something. Stuff that can, if needed, easily enough be pulled and switched to a 'lesser' hood (probably incandescent so there's less algae :))

So, here's types of fish I'm thinking, off the top of my head... (NOT all of them, just some options that I'll pick from!)
  • 3-4 cherry barbs (one male)
  • 4-6 harlequin rasboras
  • 2-3 oto cats
  • 3-5 small cories (panda, dwarf)
  • 4-8 neon/cardinal tetras
  • 4-8 rummy nose tetras
  • 3-4 platies (1 or no males)
  • 3-4 male fancy guppies
  • 1 dwarf gourami
  • 4-6 amano shrimp
  • 1-3 'big' snails (not pond)
  • 3-4 pencil fish
Any other you can think of? Once again, I will NOT be adding all!!!

So, what combo would you do?

I think that will be fine.

Better to have more number of members of own species and less number of species than to have more species and fewer numbers of each species.

3 oto cats
6 small cories (panda, dwarf)
10 neon/cardinal tetras
3-4 male fancy guppies
1 honey gourami
4-6 amano shrimp
1-3 'big' snails (not pond)
6 pencil fish

What species are these snails? What species are these pencilfish? What gender are these gouramis? As for the dwarf gourami, I ditched that. Chances are you get ones bred from Asian fish farms where fish are fed with foods containing hormones thus resulting in shorter lifespans. Rummies prefer a larger tank to shoal in. Do not forget the Paracheirodon simulans which are often overlooked and are a change from neons and cardinals.

How long have they had the food?

I have no idea, probaley years... I was planning to get some new food anyways, figured it's gone bad :wall:

Mystery/apple or 4-horned snails probably :)

I would get them special order through the LFS, so anything I wanted :)

How could I forget them! I love those guys, wonder if I would find them :headbang2:

Excellent. Throw foods 2 months after buying them. The vitamins in them would be destroyed already by the constant exposure to light and air thus the fish does not get the vitamins ensuring a boost in immune system.

Good luck with that.:)

I like Lupin's list but I'd skip the guppies although I like rasboras a lot. Depending where you are (not asking) Exotic Pets in Hadley or Skipton's in Boston might have some good choices.

Been to Skipton's (bit of a drive) once, it had a great selection! Funny story, we all thought the store was on fire but couldn't figure out where it was coming from! (turned out someone left a lamp on then set it on something plastic...)

Haven't been to Exotic Pets... but I'm going Northampton this week, I'll have to check it out :headbang2:and bring a cooler to give the fish home :dance2:
