Hungry L144's and Friends

Awesome pics and a great looking fish!

i knew id seen one in the classifieds http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180515

great pics they are lovely plecos

The ones for sale in the classified are common albino long fin plecos, not L144. L144 is a separate ancistrus species called Blue Eyed Pleco, they are not related to the common albino long fin at all. There is also a short fin version of the L144, but I only have the long fins which are less common than the short finned variety.

The ones red's got are the regular albino LF bristles, while Pinkertd's look like the super cool lemon LF L144's. Very cool fish and gorgeous setups!

You are right Inka, some people call them lemon plecos.

Thanks for the compliments everyone!

I drove 60 miles yesterday because one of my favorite LFS had 1 of these lil guys on hold for me!! .... when i got there ...much to my dissapointment the fish was dead because an irresponsible employee had to "move a rock" in the tank to get another fish for a customer.....

Debbi your fish are very beautiful!! Well Done!!! :thm:

i see the mlisted here and they say that the albinos are the same as l144

im assuming they are wrong?

They show a picture of ancistrus species 3 (common bristlenose) in both the brown form and the albino form (with the standard red eyes). Their advertising is a little confusing. The ad states it's for purchase of an L144, although they start out describing brown and albino species 3, down further in the listing they do talk about the yellow/orangish pleco with black markings (black/blue eyes) which would be an L144. Then I looked at the prices and they would never ask so much money for a common species 3. A short fin L144 sells on average $10.00 from a breeder, and as I said the long fin variety averages $25 for a 1" baby fish. They are asking almost $60 for a long fin.

Here is a description of the true L144 (and they never come in brown or come with red eyes):
The Golden Black Eyed Ancistrus (GBA) or L144 is a result of a genetic defect known as Amelanism. It is basically the same principal as an albino defect but is a lack of dark pigment, as opposed to a lack of all pigments, in albinism.

Albino - lacking all pigment
Melanistic - Excessive Dark pigments
Amelanistic - Lacking Dark Pigments

As it is a genetic defect it is passed from parent to offspring using the usual laws of genetics. The original amelanistic male Ancistrus was wild caught in Paraguay; he was bred with a normal female and then the resulting offspring were re-crossed until the defect became ‘fixed’ and all offspring produced from a pair had the defect.
