Most of the fish listed are fairly short lived anyways.

I'm pretty sure my life expectancy would greatly diminish if I told my husband I wanted another tank to raise babies in:hitting: I'm for the bala sharks though, love those guys!
Dwarf cichlids is a pretty general term that describes a number of species, some quite suitable for a planted tank, ie. German rams, Bolivians, kribs.

I really love our little pictus catfish, but if he's going to make dinner out of his tank mates, maybe I should consider finding him a new home when he gets a bit bigger. (dangit!) When that time comes, what would be a good bottom feeder replacement for him? Opinions?

both the pictus and white algae eater should go. once the pictus realizes that his tankmates are food and his mouth is big enough to fit them inside, he'll start taking advantage of the situation. as for the algae eater - is it an albino chinese algae eater? they get big, stop eating algae, and go after other fish in order to feed off their slime coats. a few small plecos would fit nicely into your tank - bristlenose, rubberlip, pricier ones like gold nuggets or queen arabesque, even a royal would fit in there if you have driftwood for it to eat. there are tons of small plecos, trouble is finding them locally.
You could buy another tank and use the excuse it is a hospital/quarantine tank, then use it for the babies! LOL!
I love both the otos and the cories. You probably have plenty of room for some of each. A half dozen otos would keep any algae at bay and a small school of corydorus is always nice in a tank. Let me add one more vote for more fish but take it easy on the guy.
I'll look into some of the suggestions made to replace my little pictus. Dangit! I really like that little guy, too! (sigh) I guess that'll teach me to impulse buy.
