There's just as much irresponsible fish release as there is irresponsible breeding. Look in any temperate climate retaining pond or small body of water, eventually you'll come across someone's old fish.
The premise to the entire hybridization thing is what bothers me, is it really worth it just to have a KEWL LOOKING FISH?
