Hydra

How long are you leaving your lights on?

I try for anywhere between 8 -10 hrs.

Except for yesterday, that turnt into about 13 hrs because I had my nose in the tank. And hadn't noticed the time.

The plants seemed to like it. Just bubbling away...

Nitrate is next to nothing, if that makes any difference.
I don't think thats been mentioned yet.

The lights out might have to be an option. But I'm thinking the other 2% might just up and multiply again.

guppies! yep.. don't feed them and they will eat them right up!

Sounds good and cheap is real good.

I don't do much for looking at guppies at the LFS. hopefully they sell just males.
It seems like I recall seeing $$$ a pair, when I do look. Then I'd have to figure out what to do with a million guppies.

...freeze them out
My snails probably wouldn't care for that idea.

... blacken most of your tank and they will go to the light & u can just vac them right up!

Do these things go that mobile?

I don't think I've read anything on their mobility yet(until now, anyway).

I guess they're something like an anemone, and move around?

You broke yours. ;) But thanks, I got there!
Now after doing a preview. I see mine doesn't work either. They are both leaving off the last )
Ok, now mine works with an extra ) :thm:

===============================

And now... :swear: :swear: :swear: :swear: and....:swear: !!!

This thing seems to get worse everyday.

And no... nothing, about eating a snail.

But will eat a flea. And I have aleast 1. Although the flea only lives about a year, it can make a bunch of babies, which would make my hydra :grinno:

From the first paragraph there...
They can be found in most unpolluted freshwater ponds, lakes and streams in the temperate and tropical regions by gently sweeping a collecting net through weedy areas

And again.... :swear: I just cleaned and cleaned that tank! It wasn't very bad before, so I'm sure they're all in their > >:headbang2::silly: :welcome:

I think it's time to make one ugly tank!!!
Gonna have some Phat Happy Snails!

And hopefully 1 Male Guppy. :dance2:

But if they aren't eating snails, what are they eating?
It sounds like they need something in a material way to me. And not just living off of whatever in the water column? I guess they could be doing, just, that. There's probably all kinds of good reasons for them to thrive in this set-up

I don't want this to sound like I'm arguing, because I'm not, just trying to help you with the problem. I also have no idea how long you've been into aquariums, so not trying to treat you as if you're a newbie either.

I'm fairly sure that microscopic organisms arise when there is excess waste in the tank... Why? When things poo, there is still digestible material left, which the micro-organisms eat. When there's an excess of food, things reproduce... A lot. Those little guys get eaten by the hydra.

That's where all the food for your little problem are coming from, the extra poop from the snails

I think I'm right when I say this, but, I'm no expert, and just going on what commonly arises in aquariums (Daphnia, planaria, etc...)

Hope I helped a little.

Don't worry about discussing stuff. ;)
Us aquarium types will discuss anything and everything from test strips, to floating bags of fish, to how much light what plant needs or don't need, etc. into the ground. Then wake up tomarrow and do it again. So, no problems their.

I've been around fish off and on for a bunch of yrs. But I'm still a newb with this kind of stuff, because I've pretty much always had 1 tank at a time. And seemed to do things, for the most part. Good enough to stay out of trouble. And/or the lucky thing.

My first tank was somewhere around 38 yrs ago. A 10g from my brother with a couple of goldfish. They lasted maybe 3 and 6 months.

The next one came around about 19 yrs ago. A 29g that me and then wife, would take outside about once a month and clean, inside out, AND the gravel.

Finally, at a mom n pop type(1 guy) LSF. I was talking to the guy and said to quit doing that and handed me a pamplet. thats how I found out about the nitrogen cycle.
2 or 3 weeks later I bought a 75g from him. And had it sitting in the middle of the room on the floor when my wife walked in, said "I aint cleaning that!" and kept going. I just laffed and said "Me either!"

Ended up with 70 something fish in it. And was doing fine until I tore it down to move it out of that house.

Ok, back to the problem Hydras. And nope never ever saw before in my life until a week or so ago, when I thought they were hair alge starting up.

From that link up their...

Sounds like my tank. Really!

I ran the Hit Magnum with a gravel vac attached to it today. Right before that last post I made.

There wasn't much of anything to clean up. The most I saw was when I stuck it to the clump of Java Moss I got about a week and a half ago. It could have had some hydra on it? But, that would be kind of hard to find on moss. But really its the... I have it now what stage. However it got started.

Oooops just looked at the clock. Gotta go for now...

Back from cooking/eating/ running to petsmart.

Came home with 4 Male Guppies.

Seem to be doing good. Ate good, and wandered around in pairs for a while. And now looking like they're starting on the Whos the baddest, game.

Crap! I just found one of these guys in my invert tank. I'll have to check tomorrow to see if I can find more. Don't want them snarfing any little shrimplets. Just suck it out with a baster and I should be ok right?
