hydro III sponge filter?

i just recived a hydro III sponge filter and i have no clue how to use it yes i read the box but what i dont get is how the water is supose to go in through the sponge there is no force that pulls water inside i tried to move the filter against a big particle and it didnt get sucked up am i using it wrong or is there something missing?

Sponge filters require an airstone or powerhead to work. If you don't have one on it yet, then that's why it's not working.

plus a sponge is mostly bio filtration.... even with a power head its not going to keep the water super clean.... your going to have to water change and gravel vac.....

so if i get an airstone it will work fine but are you sure the water will get sucked in?

The water is getting sucked in with just the airline, but will be better with an airstone, and even better with a powerhead. The water is sucked through thousands of sponge cells all over the entire sponge filter. You aren't going to see the suction you're looking for because there isn't a concentrated place where mass suction takes place. It is distributed over the entire surface of the sponge filter.

Even with a very strong pump, you're not going to get what your looking for. It doesn't mean it isn't working properly.

Tens of thousands of sponge filters are utilized by fish breeders all around the world. If they didn't work, that wouldn't be the case.

how they work is simple, the air bubbles in the lift tube cause a drop in pressure. Since the lift tube is "empty" of water, due to the air filling it, the water in the aquarium tries to fill that space up again due to the water pressure surrounding the lift tube.

If you let the lift tube stick out of the water slightly, you will see water flowing over the side of it.
