I do not mean to argue the fact that refractometers are better. I am sure they are and I will invest in one soon myself, to be on the safe and sure side. However, I always clean my Deep Six Hydrometer with freshwater and vinager after every use and it appears to give me a correct reading. How do I know this is a correct reading, you may ask? I have brought my water into the LFS to be tested with a refractometer as a little experiment and I got the same reading that my hydrometer gave me a few hours earlier. I am not sure how much longevity you can get out of a hydrometer, even with good care, but I have had mine for over a year and it continues to be accurate. Again, I am sure that refractometers are even more accurate and have a much longer life span. I guess my question is, with good care, how long can I continue using my hydrometer without a potential problem?
