Hypancistrus zebra (zebra pleco)

Check aquabid? Apparently you haven't checked lately. The last somewhat close to adult zebras I saw for sale were going for $250 per fish at 2 inches. Those fish were in Thailand and I'm not sure how they would take shipping.

On aquabid, a few 1 inch fry (judging by the pics, I'd have to say they were less than that though), 3 to be exact, went for over $500....... Unless of course there was some side dealing no one else knows about and the bid was set huge so the buyer would get them no matter what.

The last fry I bought cost me $85 each and were under one inch, they are just now coming up over that size, I've had them for a few months now.

I'll pay whatever the going rate is for fry. I'm just interested in the genetic diversity of my group AND I'm one of the people on 'The List' for babies.

I personally like the fish and as was stated earlier, it's a hobby. IF there is a fish I fancy, I will save until I can have it. I'm not made out of money but this is my hobby. When the fish spawn, that will be GREAT but I'm very content to raise them up until that time, that's over 1/2 the fun for me.

SO, if any of you out there have REAL zebra fry for sale, I'm interested. Even willing to pick them up if it's in the same region (less than about 500 miles).

On aquabid when they are on there, the fish are running $130-150 each for 1" fry.

If you really really want some, this guy, Rich has a large number of spawning pairs, last time I asked he told me $125 for 1" fry. Here's his email. GETRICHQUICK911@aol.com

The price has been set lower on the global market check aquabid. With one male three females I'm doing ok yes they take a long time even to get to 1.5 inches. They are a relativley easy fish to breed compared to some apistos. (panda) I don't breed fish to make huge profits if you do your stupid because it will never work out. I do it because I enjoy it period, it's just a part time hobby thats it. I'm not set on that price I don't have any sellable fry right now, but I wil probably sell them at an amount just enough to cover my operating costs.

zebrapleco how long have you had those fry for sale for 200 US each? :D

Rich usually has a wait list on his fish, and was one of the people I was referencing near Chicago. I can definitely vouch for him as a great guy to deal with!

Barbie

This is the first time that I have posted any for sale. I hope that the people that buy them love them as much as I have.

Ok then haha just trying to stir the pot around here it seems to get boring sometimes. I'll sell mine for more then.

I have two zebra males available to me at my lfs for $282 a pop.

I'm searching for females desparately. I have a 50g tank that will be dedicated to zebras and I'm hoping to work out the right "formula" to breed more females in each batch.

My lfs has told me of a breeder in California who has successfully breed her zebras with a success of 5-6 females guaranteed in each batch. But she refuses to tell any other breeders how she does it. My lfs' theory is water temp during the spawning, but no one knows for sure. Hell, I'm willing to drive to a fish store in Cali if they have zebras for less than $200.

Riverwonders.com is selling wild caught (how they got them past the ban, I'm not sure) babies for $400 per fry. I'm almost to the point of purchasing them only because they take credit cards.

I'm a devoted fish lover, my first job was in a fish store and I loved it.

If anyone has babies that they can guarantee me that are female, I have a happy 50g tank waiting for them. Please contact me.

geez, I'm glad I got my Zebras when they were $49 a piece for decent sized ones. Now I haven't seen one for years.

If you get someone to guaranty the sex of a fry or even small fish (less than 2 inches) do not buy from them..don't even talk to them any more because they are full of shi**. I have two 1+ inch zebras for sale and will not be able to sex them for some time. But sorry I do not take credit cards only large bank Official Checks so that I can verify that the funds are good.

I'm willing to wait. Especially if breeders are asking for certified checks then I won't be able to fork up the amount of money I'm willing to invest in terms of credit for them.

So I guess I'll get the two zebras from my lfs and just wait until I find a mating pair that goes on aquabid.com or wait until a breeder is willing to raise their babies to 2" and hope to get a female. Something will turn up through my search efforts and also my lfs efforts, because they're encouraging me and helping me with locating female zebras.

Barbie seems to know a lot and from my research she's been really successful with her darlings. Hopefully all the zebra plecos lovers and breeders will continue their spawning efforts and help out these little cuties to continue their threatened species.

Btw, I will not be ordering from Riverwonders.com, I did some more research and for their price, I cannot risk receiving unhealthy babies or the wrong plecos. I called them and asked if I ordered the babies today, when would I receive them and they told me it would take a week to deliver. That doesn't make sense if they've had 50 wild caught babies since June. Why would it take a week to deliver if the babies were already in their inventory? Sounds too fishy to me (pardon the pun).

So alas, I'll continue the search and hope to find the lovely zebra females I want. I'm willing to wait and will the time to perfect my tank for these babies.
