ok i went to petco the other day because i was told they had alot of acsessories on clearance, i like to buy them and put them away, that way when i get the urge to redecorate i can put out all my good buys and pick and choose what i want, but any way thats all besides the point..i saw and heard fopr the first time a knowledgable sales person who was taking the time and effort to talk a woman out of buying the wrong fish for her very small ten gallon!(two ballas and several other obscenly stupid fish)this gentleman then talked oa women out of purchasing fish for a newly still in cart tank and gave her info on cycling and pointed her in the right direction! he also promply removed two dead fish when brought to his attention and thanked me for doing so ! he was impressive he either must be into the hobby or care about his job! i asked him a few questions about some fish i had been interested in and then checked his info online, i asked to speak to his manager the next day and made sure they knew what a great employee they had! i truley as long as he is working would purchase fish from him and feel confident enough in his knowledge to ask a question and listen to his answers! just wanted to share something from the other side of the whole chain petstore experiance!

I am glad you spoke to his manager, and I am sure that his manager spoke to him for you. We don't thank people enough, especialy those who go out of thier way to do something for a good cause. I hope he then went home satisfied that he did a good job that day. There is a lesson in this for everyone, I hear so much bad talk about lfs's who did this and did that, granted some lfs's are atrocious, but I have to say that my lfs is great, when I ask a question he does not know the answer to he plainly says "I'll get back to you when I know the answer", so they are not all bad (I am not assuming that everyone thinks that lfs's are all bad). It is really good to hear something good for a change well done judgemax.

his manager was very happy that he was doing such a good job ...i am hoping he did say something to the gentleman about it and that he did understand that he was doing really well..alot of times people start out really eager at a job but it wears off after little or no recognition...

I'm so glad to hear that you took the time to speak to his manager, that was really nice of you. It's likely he'll hear about it from the manager, and even if he doesn't it's still a good thing to let managers know their staff are doing good work.

this is a strange suggestion, but a serious one. send an email to a national administrator of the chain store (you'll find an address online). tell them the honest story of your visit to their store, your preconceptions about the store, and how this employee changed your view.

at the very least they'll have the email forworded to their store, printed out and handed to them. even that is a nice reminder of the good job they are doing.

after getting my tank and everything else form my LFS I had to speak to the guys manager aswell. He loves me now as he was due a pay review and this prompted it!!! Have actually socialised with the guy over a bear or two and he's rapidly becoming a good friend. Good advice is like rocking horse poo in this hobby - ie. very rare!
glad to hear you have had a good experience and well done to that employee!

Wow, that is really cool that you told his boss what a good experience you had with the guy. I wish someone would do the same for me. I have to talk someone out of buying the wrong fish, or a new tank and fish on the same day almost everyday and all I usually get is a dirty look and a "Well, my friend said..." or "I've kept oscars and goldfish together before! With guppies! And everyone was fine!" (I'm not making that one up, a guy ACTUALLY said that to me.) Just yesterday I got yelled at by my boss because a lady called and complained that I was 'pushy' because I told her she needs to keep guppies in a heated tank. I know I didn't say anything out of line, I think she just got mad because she doesn't want to hear that she's not taking proper care of her pets. I'm seriously thinking of quitting this job because I'm tired of the people who don't listen and don't care...they come in all mad because their fish die all the time and when I tell them how to prevent it they complain that water changes are too much work or it's too much money to get the proper size tank for the fish they have or want. I would rather get sh*t on by a rat than deal with some of the idiots that come in there. [/rant]
