i am new to saltwater can i do this

im setting up a 46 gal tank w a ceylon puffer (wich i will be getting in 2 days)
and i was just wondering if this setup is sutable for tankmates
if so any recomendations of a brackish fish i can buy and aclimate with the puffer
OR
a salwater fish i can think about getting later when the puffer is in high brackish/full marine

also when the pffer gets in the high sg this will be my first saltwater tank
not like i dont know what to do, ive already did a bazillion hours of reasearch
but dont recomend anything fragile

with the above noted im just gona list some fish that ive saw in the fs that catch my eye (look neat, fit$, but not sure)

flame angel
royal gramma
yellow tail damsel
lemonpeel pygmy angel
Spotted Wrasse
yellow tang
spotted boxfish
spotted toby
banggai cardinal
snowflake eel

theres probably like 100 fish there that i cant have but watever i never did saltwater before

as for the backish tankmates i actually know some fish that fit my description
that is if you guys think i can have tankmates ide be happy with just the puffer
im just intruiged by how colorfull the saltwatter fish are

I don't think its a good idea to mix a brackish with saltwater fish but that's just my opinion as I have never tried it and never plan to. Pretty sure those puffers are aggressive but I have no clue if they would be compatible with any SW fish.

As far as your SW list, no tangs, boxfish or toby in a 46 gallon and if you get a dwarf or pygmy angel don't put two in unless they are a mated pair. Not sure about the snowflake.

frome what ive read the puff can go full salt at 4+"
and keep in mind that i know nothing about those fish that i listed
i just walked into a fs w a scrap of paper and copyed down names of the apealing fish that are under $40
what i realy want in an answer is
can i add another fish w the puffer or is that overstocking
and
if so what fish wuld be good or bad

I would limit to 4 or so small fish total or maybe 5 if you stay on top of your WC's, skimming, etc. Wish I could help more on the compatibility with the puffer but I just don't know a lot about brackish. I believe scats are a brackish fish I have seen with puffers. They can get large though.

Most of the forums out there seem to say that Ceyln puffers are species only... could be mixed with one or 2 of it's own kind, given enough hiding spaces...



But I HAVE read that a Bala Shark may work okay, provided that A) the shark is roughtly the same size as the puffer when they are introduced, and B) there are lots of caves/hiding spots..

actually now that i think about it even if its not overstocking it wuld be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY esier to go with just the puffer

Considering 40g is the minimum recommended tank size for a Ceylon & with substrate/decor (especially live rock), you're about right there.
