Messing around in the tank today, I managed to snap a large N. stellata clean off its bulb. No roots are connected to the bulb, so I'm assuming they're still attached to the plant.

I don't know if a dwarf lily can really live without its bulb, however. If not, I'd rather just uproot the thing now before the roots start to die and foul the substrate. (They grow large dense mats of roots, so I know there's a lot of plant material in there.)

Well, it'll have to come out of the tank during tomorrow's WC. And it's got four floaters ... sigh. Farewell, lovely lily.

Oh, well, the bulb will sprout again. And it's a good opportunity to do a little rescaping, which is apparently a never-ending activity. Silly me, I thought you planted a tank once and just settled back to enjoy it ...

I grown enough individual lily plants (from one bulb) to fill a 55g.

I will have to disagree. If the broken piece has roots it can most certainly grow. I 've propagated many, many, lilies and lotus this way. And the bulb will most definitely regrow.

hehe.. yeah.
I love those Lilies, by the way.

I have 6 of 'em in my 29.
I like it "weedy."
I'll post pics once all of them send up multiple floaters (Just a couple so far).
Those couple of floaters will turn into many quite soon! :) I love the way the pads always seem to open upside down and then somehow turn themselves over when I'm not looking! The tangy of stems is pretty weedy looking, lol.

I grown enough individual lily plants (from one bulb) to fill a 55g.
How'd you manage that? Did they develop separate bulbs?

Nope. Just one bulb that continually produces plants that are separated and replanted individually.

Personally I like lilies and lotus better if you don't let floaters form. Sure they won't bloom but they form a beautiful mound of leaves. A Red Thai Lily grown this way is simply breathtaking.
