Firstly, I'd like to share my most sincere of apologies with all of you for my absence. It has been caused by a variety of things: Massive shifts in my company which caused me to have no internet time (I can only log on at work... no 'net at home!!), my friend losing her digital camera (I have one, but no USB cable that works with her cranky computer) and also my ridiculous work schedule (I'm currently working 32 hours of overtime above the 40 hours I'm normally scheduled to work!!)
I work for Dollar/Thrifty which is a large car rental corporation as a sales rep. I'm responsible for taking calls for customers interested in making reservations. Right now, we are in the process of rearranging our call centers and opening up a new facility in a different region of the US and another in a different country, so right now my reservation center is having to take up all the slack for the other two that are starting... and this is during our peak reservations season. So they are resorting to every possible ploy to get people to work extra hours... short of mandatory overtime of course.
So I've been taking shifts for people with doctor's appointments, weddings, graduations, you name it along with taking extra hours to help out with the call percentages. Then there's my friend's wedding I've been planning to attend and let's not forget my own issues with the immigration of my fiance.
Long story short... I've simply been stretched too thin and had hardly any internet access besides. In fact, I've taken about 24 calls (actually monitored it) while I've been making this post and I started it sometime around 3:36pm or so.
Now onto news about Dante. He's been renamed because the more I spent time with him, the more the name seemed more appropriate than Damien. He was looking dull and a bit discolored when I originally brought him home, but he was back up to par within the first week and he's been fit and fiesty ever since.
My friends think I'm crazy because I talk to him and baby him so much. He's been a little piggy since he was poured out of the bag, but he's finicky and only likes frozen and live foods thusfar. He snubs any pellet form food I offer no matter how hard I try to persuade him. So he's been living the good life on bloodworms, tubifex, and brine shrimp. I learned the hard way why bettas and shrimp don't mix. He made quick work of the ghost shrimp I added to the tank. He loved hunting down and eating the free-swimming baby shrimp that broke free of the females. He also learned that if he fussed and harassed the females, they'd drop more babies for him to pounce. And this constant prodding led him to first kill my male shrimps and thereafter my females died of what appeared to be internal bleeding or damages from Dante's attacks. No matter... the ghosties were orignally bought to feed Reptar and into his tank they went.
So right now Dante is king of the 5-gallon and his only companion thusfar that has weathered his... ahem... 'curiosity'... is my red ramshorn snail whom he's stopped nipping at and generally only looks at when he's bored or hungry. He takes great joy from playing his own sort of 'hide-and-seek' with his coconut cave and I still can't help but smile when he wiggles his way into the skylight hole in the top of the shell to peer at me from inside his little cave. He's just too precious!!! I still spend long hours just watching him go about his business, completely thrilled at how pretty he is. I've made several little sketches of him and I intend to work on a painting or full-blown artistic drawing of him here soon once I'm sure I have his nuances down right.
Expensive, yes... but well worth it. He's not the bored, flaccid, disinterested bettas I've grown accustomed to seeing at petshops here. He's fiery and curious and active! Never a dull moment with my Dante... he's constantly exploring and moving about and checking out every square centimeter of his turf. And oh, how he FLARES!!!! It's a beautiful sight and he'll even get riled up at the sight of my finger pressed to the glass. I'm just so pleased to find a betta that reminds me of how my bettas used to act when I was a kid. That classic 'attitude' that I've been missing so much in the species....
And you ask if there will be photos. Well, my main reason for returning is because my friend called me at work to tell me she found her camera and I'll be picking it up on my way home from work. I'll take photos and hopefully we'll have some uploaded by tomorrow. I hope that will work for everyone here. I'm terribly sorry about this long delay and you can expect similar delays from me for at least the rest of June due to these corporate shifts we're enduring... but I assure you, I will continue to stick around here.
... If you guys don't break out the pitchforks and torches on me first for my tardiness.
