lol yes, i have made it through the 08 celebration. just waking up now though, very bummish of me. i'm going to cook up some breakfast... (lunch?) and run some tests. that little dannio is still alive, however. i bet he steers clear of that python from now on! i'll be back in a bit with my results for the day. hopefully we can get our champagne ready for a toast.

ok todays results are in. *sigh*

Bottle #1: it appears my PH has dropped dramatically from 7.4 - 6.4

Bottle #2: my ammonia seems to be between 0 and .25ppm, but more on the yellow (0) side.

Bottle #3: nitrites... oh the nitrites. 0ppm since the day i set up.

Bottle #4: my nitrate level appears to be 0... now a 2nd opinion believes it's a deeper yellow than it has been so could this possibly be on the road to orangy 2.0??!

test tubes are in order as listed from left to right.

Looks good. By the way, the amonia level card that comes with the API Master Kit is a little off in color. The "0" bar on the card is more golden yellow than the water vial looks when it is showing "0" (at least with my well water). Leave the gravel for a couple weeks.

a couple weeks, honestly? this sucks man. i'm gonna have to try and find someone with some sponge media i can squeeze in my tank.

I'm not saying it will take a couple more weeks tp cycle, just leave the gravel there a couple more weeks to make sure the tank's own BB can take over.

oh ok, phew! after it's in there a few weeks, can i hang it in another tank of mine to get it going?

yep

Were all here man, I like your idea rapidly setting up tanks to escape boredom :)

Question: How long would it take to seed a new filter in an established tank?

If the new filter in the established tank is just an extra filter it would seed rather quickly as the bacteria will just spread out. If you are removing/replacing an existing filter and all new media It would probably take about a week or so for the bacteria colony to reestablish. Most of the beneficial bacteria live in the filter.
