i may have to opt for that.

ok, i could be wrong but i think i already have anacharis.. (pic below)
should i pick up some more, along with some fertilizer?

then whats with all the people saying "you only need to do this once" a.k.a. once you have one cycled tank, you can just seed it into other tanks. (like dirtydawg did to mine)

I seeded my 55, a 10 and a 3 this way and never even saw any amonia. As I said before, I used gravel, filter cartriges and decorations and had no problems at all. It can defenitely be done.

It should be. Just give it another day or two.

Certainly it can, but squeezing a sponge into the tank ain't the same as throwing a piece of used driftwood or a bag of gravel in the tank. The bacteria we care about aren't even in the water column. You can't cycle a tank by using water from another tank. You can HELP cycle a tank that way, but you cannot simply transplant a cycle via water. If I moved the canister filter, all the gravel and driftwood in my 75g into a brand new 75g, I'd still expect a mini-cycle due to losing all the bacteria on the tank glass.. If I just moved the water, then I'd expect a full blown cycling event.

katuuuz, whomever told you "you can just seed it into other tanks." didn't explain it to you properly. You can seed as many tanks as you want, but seeding is simply that, a seed. Until that seeding grows enough to handle your bioload, you aren't cycled.

ok well we'll see what the readings are in the morning. (dawg also gave me a fair amount of polyester batting he lets sit in his tank at all times). i put that in between my filter sponge and bio rocks. i'm just just getting tired of it. i personally was "cycling" about a month before adding this media/water. only saw ammonia, never nitrites.

hmm, weird. my lfs just told me anacharis were illegal in CT. (called to see if they have any). he said he'll have some hysteria??? don't rememeber the exact name... but not until thursday!:swear:

Dude,I have to jump in here.let me first say I am not anywhere near an expert but can only tell you what I did.If you remember I was looking for some filter media to seed my tank the other night,I was in the same position as you only I was doing a fishless cycle.I too was getting very inpatient
A little over two weeks my tank was running with pure ammonia added up to 5 ppm like suggested, everyday for over two weeks I would check ammonia, rite, rate, nothing ever changed, over two weeks dude ,no change
never added more ammonia because it never dropped

Yesterday,I go to my local Petco and buy a small piece of driftwood for $4.69 out of the healthiest tank I can find.I didnt care what it looked like,I just cared that the tank appeared to have healthy looking fish.anyway......

I get home, plop it in the tank, couple of snails appear,so what,at least I have life in there right

24 hours later, bang, ammonia going down and nitrates up to about 10,still no nitrites, never did,not sure whats up with that

BTW,I just rechecked all tests before I wrote this to be sure I knew for sure what was going on
I used an API liquid like most do,and yes I had checked my tap water before and no nitrates ever showed up

I'm sure this will cause some conversation, but take it for what its worth,Good luck Man

This doesn't surprise me.. Now pull that driftwood out, wait 24 hours, and see how those numbers look.. It's loaded with the bacteria you need, and that bacteria is doing the job. They're currently colonizing the rest of the tank..

Leaving that floss in your tank did far more for your cycle than the water did. The floss can actually hold the bacteria.

No idea on plant legalities in CT, but it wouldn't surprise me. This crap grows like a weed (cuz it is, probably), which is why you want it.. Hornwort is an option, but be propared to deal with a plant that falls apart when you pull on it, and regrows from any free floating segments. It'll do the job, but it's messy. Elodea works well too..
