i cant take the wait any longer

I have a question that I have wondered about
Can alot of ammonia kill bacteria,in other words,if you were to introduce a small piece of driftwood in a high ammonia tank say 5.0 +,would that hurt the bacteria or would it eventually catch up and eat the ammonia

The beneficial bacteria (I forget the proper names / term right now) can be killed by too much ammonia. The numbers I've read vary between 6 & 8 ppm. Fenner states 8, not sure where I've read 6.

I agree your most recent test pics do not show 0 nitrates.

I would add no stock until you have held 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite for one week, without water changes.

oops, i have 4 more black skirtys floating in the bag right now. i guess if it takes a little longer to catch up to this new bioload i have nothing but time. i will be sure to pay close attention to the params and do the water changes needed. i also bought a hunk of driftwood and a few handfulls of gravel from a tank at my lfs, and just added them upstairs into my 20g to test hitman's way of doing things. my 3 gal is still fish-LESS cycling (i'm sure you are all happy about that) and my ammonia is staying stable at 4-5 ppm with no nitrites/rates yet after 2 weeks. I was under the impression the ammonia would drop and i'd have to dose some more... maybe just not yet. wish me luck.

Good luck Katu!

The only good advice I've seen posted since my lost comment.. :swear:

You know that part when I called you too impatient?

hahaha. i know i know man. you really think this will hurt the cycle? i'm gonna stay on top of water changes for ammonia and nitrite.. (even though i haven't seen an ounce of nitrites in any of my 3 tanks since i set them up).

I'm less concerned with your cycle than I am the fish you are cycling with.. See Coler's post for what you hould be doing at this point.

At least put that driftwood in to try and offset their ammonia..

Well all you can really do now is test and do more water changes.

... and hopefully recognize what a dumb move this was so you won't jump the gun when things level off the next time.
