hey ana, the thing about taking the pleco back, all pet stores are different, however I had to huge plecos that someone had bought and I got them as hand-me-downs. they were getting too large for the tank and my LFS(local fish store) took them off my hands. they did not however give me anything for them, which sucks. But I feel better because I got them out of my tank which was not good for them. Now I'm going to get bottom-feeders that stay much smaller.

call around to all the fish stores around you and see if you can find one that will take it back. Like Larissa said, they might not give you anything, but you will be happy in the long run to have it out of the tank, it will just end up causing you problems ;) !! And you might get lucky, some stores will give you store credits for fish you bring in. Until you have the test strips (by the way, the drops are better if you can get them) keep changing your water everday, just to be safe!! clean water is about the best thing you can do to help the tail recover,

FYI most pet stores as well as walmart sell a freshwater master kit for about $13 - $29 it has evrything you need to perform about 700 test on PH, Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitite.

Please don't rely on those strips. I bought some when I first started out and they are, for the most part, a waste of money. The liquid tests are way more accurate. Best of luck!
