I saw convicts at the LFS today. They had great coloring to them and there were many to choose from in the tank....And I fell in love and I have to have them! I don't think I'll take the chance on putting them in a community tank. Probably will get a mating pair in a 20gal high. That ok? And if they breed and the babies survive I have other tanks....and a hungry turtle! I think they had both males and females in the tank together and of all different sizes, some even practically babies. Some had red on their bellies, some had a tint of green/blue/orange, some had better looking stripes. The red bellied are the males right? And the females have the green/blue/orange tints on their fins? Would the males have the better striping?

I used to have a male and female convict in a 20 high. You should be fine with enough hiding spots. Male convicts have no red at all and female's bellies are red. The blue and green tints are just a better coloration of convicts.

So the only way to tell if its female is if it doesn't have red on its belly? I didn't see any with red on their bellies AND with the blue/green fin coloration. Will their colors stay the same as they age, get better, or worse?

Whats the biggest size tank you would put a mating pair of convicts in? How long is a 20gal long? what about a 40gal long?

convicts keep their color patterns through life...with age they may fade a bit, but what you see is what you get. and the Females HAVE red on their bellies the males dont...Males also have more pointed dorsal and anal fins than do females.
