You don't need any bio-spira, Just put your filter on your dads tank for a couple weeks, Or cram your filters media in your dads filter and then take out and put it back in yours. If you're going to use substrate I'd get that in there too.

I also bought 4 zebra danios to help the cycle get going right.

What do ya think?

haha awsome.

Im so happy. this opens a whole new world of fish for me to put in this tank!

Me, too - the biggest tank I have is a 20 so this is really exciting! Your substrate is nice, btw. It will look great with your rams.

Well I would have ran the filter in the established tank before adding fish. You would have a much faster healthier cycle that way. If you added the fish to your "cycling" tank (the new 55 gal), then you are doing a fishy cycle, add some bio-spira and ask your dad if you can "borrow" some filter media from his filter and add it to your filter. Check your water parameters and if ammonia or nitrItes goes over .25, you will need to do a water change.

btw, I do like the black gravel

i think what you really should do is use this tank as a home for the two goldfish in your dad's tank. they don't belong there, and a 55 is about what they need as adults, just for the two of them and no other fish.

lol. i didnt get a 55g tank just to have 2 goldfish in it.

The comet one died anyway. And the big fat one is fine in there. He is happy.

Well after alot of reading. I will deffintly be picking up some bio-spira (if its in stock) tmorrow while im out doing things.

So i can get my fishies in there soon!!!

im so excited.

Here are my stock plans so far (subject to change)

2x Blue rams
6x some kind of cory
12-14x neons
1-2x dwarf( or regular) gourmies
a snail, some ghost shrimp.

Hows that sound so far? i hope i have room for even more!!

I got one too :)

Hi folks...my first posting here.
I got a 55gal too and am fishless cycling it with freeze dried shrimp. Seemed like a good idea, and seems to be working out pretty well...ammonia is holding at 1.0 after 1.5 wks. Really hated the spikes and panic when I cycled my 10gal a while back. The 10gal is really my first successful habitat. I was young and ignorant during my first attempt...an often repeated refrain from what I gather from reading posts.
Hubby bought me the tank, and we got it a bit early because he got flustered at all the choices and brought me to the store to pick it out, so it is already a little ways into the cycling. Good thing he did too, because he thought we could put a 75gal on the console in the front hall! Although I would have loved the 75gal, we got the 55gal with a proper stand and lots of new equipment :D
Now I just have to figure out what to put in it...I was thinking of loaches, but since I chose what looks like a marble substrate, that may not work. I threw the bags out so I forgot what it is exactly, but, since it was the only substrate I saw that wasn't coated in some sort of polymer, I got it. I like to keep plastics to a bare minimum in my house. Of course, then I turned around and got a castle/cave thing and a dragon...my conscience doesn't always speak up when it ought to, LOL.
Also, am thinking of getting something small and colorful that will shoal, with maybe an oddball few fish that won't eat all the smaller fish.
