I got a snail!

the common ones will get about an inch, but if you buy colombian ramshorns which are gold or brown/gold striped, they can get to 2-2 1/2 inches in diameter. they aren't the random stragglers you find in planted tanks. very neat to watch, and will crawl around on your hand in the tank if you are patient. of course, i don't let them do it for long - i don't know if they will bite and i don't want to find out.

No teeth, just a large pad/"tongue" which they use to scrape the glass with...I play with mine too, they do tickle, don't they?

Don't worry about feeding them. They can live fine on left over food, undigested food and biofilm. Not to mention algae of course. And chances are you never saw it as they were tiny and living in the gravel. Also if you see 1 or 2 then you will probably have 10-20 still hiding away. Not a problem, just keep the food to a minimum and they won't over run your tank. Excess food means excess snails. They are a good barometer that way.

I couldn't get good pics of them but I did pick one up so I could get a better look and it's definately a little ramshorn.

It's a plants only tank TKOS so I haven't put fish food in there, just pure ammonia. I've been told to throw them in my big tank with my clown loaches but I think they're too cute to offer as a sacrafice for my already spoiled fish! lol
