I got 3 zebra longfin danios to cycle my tank!!!!!!!! I am really happy because they are so cute! I decided to get them instead of the neons. Here is my tank set up:

going to be:

7 zebra danios
4 platies
1 dwarf gourami
2 corys

I am waiting a MONTH to put my next fish in! I love danios now :D

When I saw the title of your post, I immediately thought of the old feminist saying (I think it's from Gloria Steinem, not sure):

"A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle."

Congrats on your new fish, I hope that they prosper and that your tank cycles quickly.

Sicne you have decided to do a fishy cycle instead of a fishless you must be prepared to do water changes. If you don't have a test kit for ammonia and nitrite and nitrate then I would suggest getting them now. When ammonia get to 1ppm or nitrite to .25ppm then start doing water changes. You will be able to tell when the tank is cycled for the current fish load when the nitartes start to climb and ammonia and nitrite stop raising 24 hours after a water change. It may indeed take a month.

I would suggest getting a minimum of 5 cories. Possibly skipping the platies or the gourami. Cories do best in larger groups. gouramis may get picked on by danios.
