I have the charcoal color. I mixed it very slightly with Quikrete Medium Sand (I guess about 7-1) and now I have a somewhat muddy, very natural looking substrate. The tank it's going into currently has Onyx sand (bleh) and although I will remove a lot of it, there will be some that stays and I'm not worried. It might go nice mixed in with the soilmaster/sand blend.
It only took a couple of good rinsings to get the water to run acceptable clear. Nothing compared to Flourite. And Onyx Sand never rinses clean.
I'm going to lay it pretty thick since I'm mostly keeping swords - amazon and narrowleaf chains. There will also be red temple plant at some point as well.
Pictures will be posted once the transition is complete. I'm doing a little at a time to make sure I don't mess with my biofilter - I just added two schools of tetras, two rams and three juvie angels so I really don't think it wise to take away what amount of biofilter I already have.
