I have no idea what could have caused two swordtails to die in one day. One had been in my aqarium for 3 and a half months, the other a few weeks. While the newer one seemed fine, still adjusting to a new environment, the older swordtail was becoming rather sluggish, as he had, for most of his life in my aquarium, been chased by my two guppies who constantly nipped at his anal fins for no apparent reason. I put in a new hiding place for him recently, and he was generally there, but he stopped eating a few days later. Is it just a coincidence that they died on the same day?

Nitrate circa 10

I have a guess: I relied on the power filter (Aqua-tech) to provide oxygen, as it poured in and provided oxygen. Eventually, I grew tired of the sound of the water, so I raised the water level to decrease the sound, but I was mindful of the fish. I watched them for a while, and they seem fine. It has been like this for three weeks, with no changes in behavior. Do swordtails need more oxygen then other fish, and just gave out after a while?
