Post got deleted double post. Has anyone in Cichlids area with Discus and Farlowellas had any problems with them (Farlo's) dieing in their tanks? If so, what have you done to resolve the problem if not what could be my problem? Water para. good, temp just dropped from 83 to 80F. Have 3 Discus, "1" Farlowella left, 6 Black Neon Tetras, and 4 Cardinal Tetras- all doing well except Farlos: very concerned.:help:

what size tank and how many did you have? Theese guys usualy are pretty efficient at eating algae, so a few of them could have went through and ate everything in there. Then with the food source gone could have starved. Did you feed them any algae waffers?

55 Gallon, never gave them any algae waffers actually this is the first time I heard of them the one Farlowella left is doing very well. The other fish are doing good though the Cardinal Tetras are sort of listless this morning.

why did the temp drop? it should be around 82-84 for the discus

the farlo cats definitely should have been getting their own food, it's possible they starved or you have a bad source of them to begin with.

what are exact ammonia/nitrite/nitrate results?

how long do you keep the farlos before they die?

do you quarantine them before adding to the main tank?

The only problem I have had with farlowellas in a discus tank wss the farlowellas attaching themselves to the discus. I had to remove them. The only other fish I had ever seen do that was otocinclus. I have kept many fancy plecos in with discus too and the two suckermouth cats that are supposed to be ok with discus were the only problems.

Farlowellas are pretty hardy, how long have you had your tank set up? If the cardinals are listless maybe it is a water quality issue.

My concern here is the temperature. Remove either the farlowellas or the discus. Farlowellas cannot do well in higher temps that discus require. If you want the discus, do not lower the temperature below 82 degrees. If you want farlowellas, then do not increase tempeature above 80 degrees. If either species' requirements is met, the other suffers. What species are these farlowellas that died, Sportsnutim? They also need constant food supply and cannot be starved off for a few days otherwise they'll resort to other means to be able to survive. Do not feed them on algae wafers alone. They will surely try other foods as a supplement. I feed mine almost thrice a day on daily basis while compensating it with plenty of water changes.
