Red Bellied Pacu (I think).

Yes it is a Red Belly Pacu, close relative to the Red Belly Paranha. You can tell the difference in the jaw shape. Piranha's will have a small row of teeth barely visible in their mouth, Pacu's wont.

Pacu's are herbavorious fish, they love plant matter. I.E. Give him a nice slice of Zuchini 3-4 times a week, remove the slice after 24 hours. You'll be amazed of how much they love Zuchini.

WARNING, THEY GET MASSIVE IN SIZE, UP TO 2-3 FEET IN LENGTH.

Did anyone mention that besides getting huge, they are schooling fish?

These really should not be sold in stores at all. They are not properly kept 99.9% of the time even when the person keeping them wants to do it right.

It's a Red bellied Pacu just liked HN said. And just like kryton said, you are going to need a giant tank if you plan to keep it. I had 2 black fin pacu that cam with my 120g. At only 2 years old they were 14+ inches and 6-8 lbs each. They are also very messy and it was impossible to keep the water clear in that tank. They had to go.
It's very sad that LFS's sell so many of them. Around here (piranha are illegal) they are advertised as vegetarian piranha. A legal alternative to a piranha. Even sadder is very very few people (almost none) have big enough tanks to keep even 1.

so what do you want him to do wiht it if he doesnt keep it? bring it back to the store so it can live in a 10G? this happens entirely too often, i see huge fish in horribly undersized tanks at the fish stores, even if the tank isnt really big enough and its not with others of its species, its still a better life than it would have had living in a 20G tank at the store

ok thanks all, he will be getting an upgrade whenever he gets too big, no worries :)
Are you keeping him in your 18g?
Pacu's grow VERY quickly and will out grow such a small tank in only a few months.
