I made a sand pit for my cories

What a great idea! I'd like to try that for my cory's. Is there a special kind of sand for this purpose?

I used an old bag of quickcrete playsand that I had gotten from home depot. The only down side was I had to wash, wash, disinfect (bec it was sitting around), wash wash wash. But luckily it was such a small amout it was easy to do. I never had any dust particles floating in my tank.

Good luck!

When I put the corries in the 10g this weekend - I decided against a lowsided container and just put some sand in 1 area (under the cave, which sits in a corner) - if it gets mixed up or lost in the gravel I'll just add more when I need it.

I thought of the plant saucer with sand but I was worried about anaerobic bacteria under it. Anybody else worry or am I overthinking it?

I'd just be sure to gravel vacuum under it every so often and it should be fine - it's the same thing you'd do if you put a solid bottom ornament in the tank.

sand for corys

Hi all,

I just used a 5cm high glass divider in one end of the tank. This I filled up with sand to 4cm. So you might say my corys have there own sandy swimming pool/bed and this does not interfere with the gravel at all. Mine is a community tank with fancy goldies, black widow tetras and corys (bronze). I also had a eel tailed tandanus in there as I was told it was O.K. NOT. Had to put him in his own tank as he was harassing all the others. He is now known as Bad Boy Bubbie.

Cheers

hmm this thread has go emthinking, ive always wanted to do a little setion of sand in my tank for my otos rather than my gravel. They do sit on the gravel but they seem uncomfortable. the plant sauce thing is a good idea.

daniel, here's another fish story for ya! I made a gravel pit for my first dojo loach. I just filled a dog dish with playground sand and placed it on top of the gravel. He was trying to burrow into the gravel, so I thought he would enjoy some sand. But he just used it as a bed! He would just lay on the sand, but not try to root through it at all. Fishies are silly :D

Ah Webcricket! We must of posted at the same time -- yup they are sleeping on it right now!

Makes me think I should put some sand in my main tank but I really don't want an all sand tank. I guess I need to think of a creative low sided container for 1/3 of the tank. Hmmmm, any ideas???

Clay saucer?

I've seen some people use those garden liner type things as a physical barrier. Just a thought.
