I'm leak testing a tank in my garage right now. It's a tank I was going to use for African cichlids, but unfortunately I think I'll have to scrap that idea, even though it would be really really cool. I am quickly running out of room in my house for more tanks, and if the choice is between another FW tank or a SW tank 75 gallons or larger... the SW tank is going to win.

So here's how this post relates to cichlids...

The tank I am filling in my garage is 48"x18", and just a couple inches shorter than a standard 75 gallon, so I'm guessing it is around 65-70 gallons. I am thinking about combining my 45 gallon and 55 gallon bedroom tanks into this 70-ish gallon tank. In that case, my stock list would be:
2 blood parrot cichlids
1 large gold severum (see avatar) :)
2 female convicts- this may not work.
1 evil firemouth
1 dwarf green pike cichlid
3 yellowtail botia
1 large rainbow shark

I also have 3 yo yo loaches in the 45 gallon now, but I was also considering moving the 45 into my living room, and tearing down the 29 that's in there. The new stock list for the 45 would then be:
1 large angel
2 keyholes
1 nannacara anomala
5 gold pristella tetras
3 yo yo loaches
1 clown pleco

I'm looking to simplify things here. The way the tanks in my bedroom are set up just isn't doing anything for me right now, and it looks kinda cluttered. I already have all the equipment I would need to make the switch.

What would you do in this situation?

I would do exactly what you wrote....just try not to put too much decorations in the 70 so it isn't cluttered like you said about the others in your bedroom....and there is plenty of time to contemplate about a SW tank...for all the posts I have read here, it seems like an ongoing task....I would be too afraid to have a salt water tank...Just like discus, everyday thing, if ya got the time go and do the SW...But, isn't FW easier to maintain?.....I think the 70ish gallon sounds like it would be something fun to do...We have an 80 gallon and hubby is usually rearranging sometimes....everything in our 29 is from our 80 except for the substrate....but everything else in there we already had....I am trying to talk him into resetting up the 20 we had for some barbs....but not right now....maybe soon....but yeah, your plan sounds like it will work....go for it and keep us posted and pics...that would be cool....:dance2:

Oh, I meant that the bedroom looks cluttered. I'll probably need more decorations and stuff for the 70. I'll have to decide what I want it to look like if I go through with this because I'm just not that crazy about the look of the 45 and the 55.

:dance2: then maybe you can put some book shelves and your bed and bed stand and such in the 70 and see how it looks....:dance2: rearrange the furniture to see how it looks in the new 70:) ...

But, anyway, how about some decor from both tanks into the 70 and go from there...or just go get new decor for the 70..(I really like the idea about the furniture though..teehee....:dance2: :) )..but good luck anyway...

start out with new decor or old and arrange and rearrange and take pix and compare them or do a poll here and see what everyone else thinks.....but I bet the end results will be great anyway...

Yes, then I could sleep with the fishies and recommend some good books to them...

I've definitely considered that, but the point of me doing this is to simplify what I have, to free up more time/space for my future SW tank.

If my FM is too aggressive, I'll have to find him another home, even though I don't really want to. Thanks for the input though!
