Depending on how much they buffer the pH that might not be so bad for me, my tap water is super soft (talking close to 0 GH/KH) and very acidic (at least as low as 6.0 on the API kit).

I don't really want to mess with the pH though, just want a little buffering in the water.

I use pool filter sand and my corys love it. It is heavy enough to not get kicked up..........
