Hi, I know I'm the odd man out here. But I do just fine with my undergravel filter and power heads. And I think this option is cheaper than all the others mentioned. Just my 2 cents.

I need a new tank and filteration. HELP!

I would go with the acrylic for a new tank, but glass is perfectly fine. I'd prefer a Magnum 350 Pro with Bio Wheels, something not referred to much on here. I have about 12 of them and wouldn't trade for free Eheims. Try your hand at a repair on the old one. If it works...then it good be a great school project for the kids. If not, go your planned route for a critter.
If you want a quiet filter, buy a Whisper. They are super quiet and all and I mean ALL of the parts on it are replaceable. The cartridges are also cheap when bought in bulk. I would suggest a Whisper Model 60 on one side of the tank and a Whisper Model 30 for the other side. That way both sides stay clean!!! These are amazing filters and I swear by them!!!!

Like the other people said, go with a Fluval 304 or 305, that is more than adequate by itself for a 55gal, you can however spend a bit extra and go overkill with a 404 or 405. If you're in Europe, Eheim and Sera canisters are good choices too, but Eheim is expensive outside of Europe and Sera products ussually aren't readily available outside of Europe and Australia/NZ. It's worth spending the money on a good quality, name brand canister filter, you'll get a decent warranty (3 years with Hagen-Fluval) and wont have problems getting parts if something wears out or gets broken.
Don't worry about Hang On Back filters on top of that, it's not necessary.
Definently go for a glass tank, acrylics are nice when new but they scratch easily and after a few of years of scratches build up they ussually look pretty bad.

If your a realy love aquariums go bigger like a 75 or 90 only if you can afford it
Me a 90 gallon tank with 2217 Eheim 2 802 aquacleaer power heads- 1 with my under gravel Even Flow and the other with a reusable quick filter in this cartridge I replace the polyester 3 oscars 1 pleco .No problems i use Python gravel cleaner and change water every 6 weeks their happy no deseases 7 years old on all.
