I need a quieter filter!

The Aqua Clear is a good HOB..... but I can't get past the non-self priming part. Of all my HOB filters (Marineland, Aqueon, AquaClear, Tetra Whisper...... The Quiet flow has the best flow and is pretty quiet also. The Aqueon quiet flow has it's motor submersed.... always more silent.

You all my think I'm crazy for saying it but the Wal Mart Marineland HOBs are indestructable...... and the quietest of them all!!!

With HOBs - IMO, Noise is directly proportional to the water level in the tank or how gunked up the filter is.

I bought the Aquatop cf 300 canister filter for $65 on amazon, for my 55 gallon. Way better than the whisper 60

Its def noise from the actual filter, not the water. I can hear it 2 or 3 rooms away from the tank. I'll check the impeller out.

I like the internal filters like this - http://www.marineandreef.com/Hagen_Fluval_U4_Underwater_Filter_p/rhg10480.htm

I HATE noisy filters. I've had canister filters, but they can leak (mostly after routine maintenance, I haven't had one develop a spontaneous leak). The internal filter is silent. I don't think they can handle the heavy stocking of some tanks. I use 2 of these in a 125 gal community tank and have been happy with them.

Just another option...

Another quiet option, with more capacity than internal filters, would be an undergravel with powerheads. That set up can handle a pretty heavy fish load with regular gravel vacuuming and water changes. It gives you nice clear water. I have a tank set up this way also. It sometimes has some vibration noise, which can be eliminated by shifting cords and outputs.

I don't do live plants, and I don't think undergravel is good for plants.

And if you don't already have undergravel plates in place...well that would not be a fun change! LOL!

Although this is a older post, I recently went with the AquaTop CF400 canister filter system. It is very quiet, and I am happy with it. However, I do need a quieter air pump. I never knew how noisy the pump was until I changed to the canister system. In addition, the water in the tank became crystal clear in less than three days.
