I got a 100 gallon fish tank filled with african cichlids. I was wondering if it would be possible to put any type of puffer in the tank. I thingk those guys are really cool and I would really like to have one. Is there any way of making this happen?

No, no, and no.

I'm not sure if there are any freshwater puffers with the same water requirements as africans, but even if there was the slow moving puffer would definately be a target for the africans.

Get a separate 15 gallon tank and get some small brakish puffers, if you want some. ;)

The most common puffers found in the hobby are indeed brackish water fish, and would do very poorly in Rift Lake water, which is high in mineral content but very low in sodium chloride (which is what makes brackish water brackish). There is a species that is common in Lake Tanganyika, but it grows to over two feet long and is equipped with a beak that would allow it to fatally injure a cichlid almost at will. So no, the combination would not be a good idea. A small species tank would probably be your best way to go.

I've heard that the the small dwarf puffers are sold as brackish, but are actually true freshwater fish. Anyone know for certain?

ps, When they want to be they are faster than you would possibley believe. Although I agree, no good for African tank.

I believe they are freshwater, but I wouldn't put them with africans cause of there size. Go to website called the age of aquariums, they have some info on puffers. Theres a better site but can't think of it right now.
