Also check up to make sure the test kit isn't expired. If you can find someone who has a reliable kit then I would double check...wouldn't hurt to make sure you're following the directions exactly.

I contacted Hagen and they informed me that their tests are unreliable for hard water..... So I need a test that works for hard water... Any suggestions?

Weird, I've never heard of that...then again it seems most use API and never had issues with testing hard water.

I have well water ie hard and use API tests and they were reliable I also used prime to be safe for cycling

Yes I do but it changes so much in days when I haven't used any.

Uhh has anyone ever told you test for phosphates? if your phosphates are way low and your nitrates are high, try dosing phosphates. Since it's a heavy plant tank they use phosphates in roughly equal proportion so it can be one way of balancing. you may also be garvelvaccing excessively or your tank may be overstocked. My suggestion is to get some chemipure elite (1 unit) and 1 purigen packet, put both in your filter. will strip nutrients from the water.

Phosphate isn't a problem, I'm dosing with an amazing fertiliser. I gravel vac lightly once a month and only remove stuff that is building up etc. I don't really want to strip nutrients, think that does more harm than anything. It's like a band aid....

unless your nitrates are consistently reading over 40-60 ppm, i wouldn't worry at all.

I have hard water and use the API kit, and always get accurate results.

I have rummy noses and cardinals do I need to keep tthem as low as possible really.
