i need help identifying my fish!!!

That's a Florida Gar. I have one and they don't get much bigger than 18" in captivity. If yours is 4 years old and has been living in that tank it's whole life then it's stunted.
I would agree with it being a Florida Gar, but it's not an Alligator Gar, 100% positive.

I hope so. My husband will be upset if he has to give it away lol.

No matter what he's in too small of a tank, and since Florida gar can get 2 feet long, or at least near that with proper care, he can't stay in that tank.

Thank u. Yea we just got him and that's what was given to us. We will get a bigger one.

They really are interesting fish, so I don't think you'll be disappointed if you get a tank big enough to house him (I'd say 150+. For now a 125g will work, but eventually will be too small front to back, unless it's a custom size).

Have you tried to feed him yet? Sometimes they don't want to transition to prepared foods, but I do suggest you try to get him on something like that due to the fact that live feeders carry parasites/diseases. If he'll already eat prepared foods then he shouldn't be too hard to care for.
You'll want to give a lot of hiding spaces, live plants or fake plants for him, so that he's more comfortable, otherwise they can startle and bang into the side of the tank injuring their snout.

I'm from MFK myself with Gar experience. ;)
I currently have a 16" Long Nose Gar in a 2,614-Gallon pond. Any thing that you would like to know, lylapavey?

I know there are people on here from MFK, since I am myself, lol.

You just get more hits about stuff like gar posting over there than here. :)

Plus there are a bunch of stickies over there with info about gar.
