I used cycle on my 29 gallon tank 2 weeks ago and have had no luck (package said 1-2 weeks to cycle). I ended up working on my cycling the hard way. Bio-spira is the way to go if you can afford the expense of ordering it (20 bucks a package with overnight shipping!)
you can cycle the tank without the kick-start, it just takes more work. I've been doing at least 50% water changes every other day and keeping my ammonia levels below .5 ppm. So I guess my advice would be to either pony up the dough for the bio-spira to get it cycled fast or be patient, do lots of water changes and make sure you go buy a test kit (25 bucks for a aquarium pharm master kit) and watch your ammonias, nitrites and nitrates for the next month and a half.
One idea that comes to mind is to borrow some gravel from an established tank. Either a friend or possibly a healthy tank at your LFS. I've done that when I was in a hurry, when I'm not in a hurry I've hung my filter on a friend's tank for a couple of weeks. Works like a charm.
No experience with bio spira, but I do agree that I've heard Cycle was bunk for many years now.
I did get the test kit - so far so good...but it probably takes a couple of days for the amonia to get started, right? So what site do I order the bio spira from? it sounds like its worth it.
Thanks!!
newbies : here is another start ups that have worked for me. run a sponge filter in another tank for a month or so in an established tank. sponge filters are cheap, good to keep available if another filter breaks, easy to move(i never let mine come out of the water... put them in a small container while removing them and transplanting them). they are perfect for small tanks with fry(no intake that can suck them in). just for a futur option on a bio filter to get a tank started. if you have a tank with 2 filters(sponge, undergravel and or overthe tank power) that tank if you are careful could do without one of those filters for a couple weeks to help start another tank.
There are only two places that sell it online. One requires that you overnight it, the other will let you do a 3 day. IME don't do the 3 day, it's too chancey. I did as an experiment and wasn't happy with the result. It skewed my success rate Always have it shipped overnight.
I recommend them because I've bought a LOT of plants from them, all my CO2 equipment and many packs of Bio Spira. I've never had a problem with these people at all.
Thanks to everyone who posted to my "help" plea! I've learned so much the past few days and I know I'll be back to post more!! My fish thank you as well!!
