I need help--really lots of it.

it's coming--lol.

I agree totally and will send an email as well.. I know they list the "normal" size in home aquaria do to premature death's etc.. A couple of fish I have bought from there with a major size difference are..

Violet Gobies, they claim 12" in size but the largest recorded in "home" aquaria is 27". They also recommend people to add aquarium salt and not marine salt, but that was probably just the employee's mistake.

Sun Catfish, they claim 6" but in reality they get up to 18" in home aquaria.. They are very slow growing so I guess this is how they get by with it.. dunno.

A 24" Pacu in a 30 gallon tank??? I have two 14" Pacu's in a 150 and thats barely big enough for them, they've already broken 2 all glass hoods from darting around.

It comes down to a simple fact, if a business is going to sell live animals they should know what they are selling..

ok. maybe that summary won't be too soon.

The noclownsinacube.net site is almost done. A more consice explantion is being given there. At the same time it will take a little reading. And, we will have sample letters to send or use to model one of your own around.

I too am involved in this worthy cause. Sent my own letter, spread the word to other boards, basically, got on board. I get it, PetsMart gets it and I hope you get it as well. Letters are the key thing at the moment. There is a magic number at every corporation that needs to be attained before those in a position of authority see a potential hit to the bottom line. We aren't there yet, must be getting close!! Support this cause people. It's intelligent, innovative, helpful and very much needed. So, in short........HAVE YOU SENT YOUR LETTER YET!!

PetSmart has been the topic of discussion .

The basic discussion is one that posits that “Accurate Information” should be provided, species by species, on Point-Of-Purchase Signs. Inaccurate information leads to poor husbandry of fish. Misinformation creates improper stocking of tanks. Stunting, disease, death, and shortened life spans are all a direct result of misleading and false consumer advertising.

A couple of letters have been posted detailing the information on just a few of the species. The few examples are indicative of the problems on the vast majority of the in-store signs.

People have wondered if we have yet to receive a response. The answer has been a consistent “not yet”. And, when the reply comes it is expected to a non-responsive deflection of the issue. Basically a “we will look into it” answer.

A reply did arrive. It lived up to the expectation. It was the perfunctory show of concern with the simple statement “…your concerns…have been brought to the attention of our Management Team. They periodically review our signage…and will make changes as appropriate on the next review”.

A Product Care Specialist sent the response. The letters were addressed to several senior level managers. PetSmart finds it more convenient to let low-level employees speak in answer to correspondence to corporate officers. It makes one wonder just what will be “changes as appropriate”.

We need your help. It is the request, once again, to send letters to PetSmart calling for an immediate review and revision of signage. Fishkeepers cannot permit PetSmart to decide when to correct a problem. We deserve honest advertising and technical information. We do not deserve to be routinely misled until they find it convenient to change their business practice. Unknowing hobbyists do not deserve to be deceived until PetSmart finds it fits their budget to make a change.

Responsible fish care starts at the store. Right now it starts with misinformation that only leads to irresponsible and inadequate care. You can make a difference. You can help create a change. Send letters to PetSmart voicing your displeasure.

www.noclownsinacube.net is now on-line (at least partially). We finalized a few of the pages and created a temporary welcome page in order to more fully discuss the reasoning behind the campaign, to share the full text of the response from PetSmart (not a whole lot there), display letters that have been sent, and provide a couple of sample formats if you do not have time to draft your own.

If you don’t make it to the site we ask you to include a couple of things in every letter. First a topic line that reads RE: POP Signage – Accuracy in Information. And, if possible copy our avatar and place it in the upper right corner of the letter. Those two simple steps will help PetSmart understand that fishkeepers are beginning to speak with a unified voice demanding a change and we won’t be easily deflected with the perfunctory PR Reply.

Follow the only active links at www.noclownsinacube.net. Names of PetSmart Senior Management, as well as address info can be found there. As the next couple of week’s progress the site will change—but we will strive to make it a quick, easy, and enlightening resource.

Thanks,
Sully

I think you're putting in an excellent effort to change the information at PetSmart. I'm not living in the US, otherwise I would send a letter. People shouldn't be misinformed about fish just so the store can make a profit from people's lack of knowledge.

I just wanted to suggest to you that the colour of the text on your site is a bit hard to read against that dark blue, but besides that the site is looking great! :) Keep up the fantastic work!

thanks--it is a dramatic change from the pages inside. it was a page put together so we had something at the beginning--we cannot seem to agree on a permanent start page yet--it will change. Until then,

SEND LETTERS--lol

i keep getting more confused by the information PetSmart provides.

Tonight i looked at the Angel Fish Pet Care guide they provide on-line.

In that publication they describe the angel as an 8" fish top to bottom. On the store signage they say 4" with no reference to Standard or Total Length.

In the Pet Care guide they say it is ok to stock fish (even cichlids) with the 1" per gallon of water rule. They also suggest a minimum tank size of 29 gallons.

So my confusion. Would I stock 7 angels or 3 1/2 angels in a 29 gallon tank? If I went with 7 angels would I be able to kep them alive. Even with the 25% monthly pwc suggested?

Ladies and Gentlemen help us help all the hobbyists that can't possibly know what to do when getting information like this from retailers.

Send Letters to PetSmart asking them to provide accurate and consistent information.

Check out the site--we have some basic letters that have been sent. If you are not comfortable drafting your own cut and paste information from our samples to create your own.

www.noclownsinacube.net

If we speak with a single voice we can change the way fish are sold.

have you sent your letters yet--lol.

We have our site running--and building. www.noclownsinacube.net. It helps to put the issue in context better than a thread.

Retail Trade Practices is the focus of a single topic discussion baord hung on the back of the site. any input or comments are welcome.

the on-line communities page shows how popular the topic has become across the web. The number of individuals and communities becoming involved and supporting the effort grows on a daily basis.

Thanks for your help so far. we still need it. we need it everyday. it is up to hobbyists to get the message across to retailers with a single, consistent voice. Lend yours to the effort.

Send those letters--lol.
