hello everyone, i have just started my 10 gallon tank up and getting it cycled.Right now i currently have 1 pleco and 1 platty in the tank. I would like to add a few more when my tank is done with the cycling process. Here is what i was thinking about. Please give me your sugestions. Thankyou

#1 group (4 large tetras) or

#2 group (1 lyre tail molly, 1 guppy, 1 swordtail) or

#3 group (3 honey dwarf gourami) or

#4 group ( your guy's sugestions)

P.S. please tell me if they sounds overstocked. Thankyou for the help

I'm all in favor of #3 as gourami are one of my favorite fish because of their personalities, coloring, and graceful movements.

Tetras should be in large groups, but I think 4 is ok. 1 swordtail, 1 guppy? I would recommend them being female. Most of the time males become agressive without a female around and may bother your other fish (in this case, each other). I would go with the dwarf gouramis since they stay small, so a small group would be ok.

Ummm...don't forget the fish that are already in there. What kind of pleco? Look into that--if it's a common pleco, it's going to get way too big for your tank. And platies are sociable and like to hang out in groups (more a loose association than a school). I'd recommend taking back the pleco if it's a common and getting a few more platies. And maybe only one gourami, though my experience has been with pearls not honeys.

Considering that these schooling tetras exist in schools comprised of thousands of individuals, a group of four is just as unnatural as a group of six.

Six seems to be an arbitrarily assigned figure for schooling fish that's very popular around these parts lately.

That being said, "the more the merrier" is the case with these fish, but not at the expense of water quality or space requirements.

I have looked into and found out that it is a common pleco. Now in about a year to ten months i will have a larger tank. Probably about a 40 gallon at least. Will i have this amount of time before i must worry? I also have a 5 gallon tank running with no fish that i could maybe stick my platty in and buy another so they could have company, Good idea or bad? If this happens could i stick in about 10-12 cardinal neons with the 2 gourami's in my 10 gallon?

I've never owned a pleco, so really I can only say what I've read on this site. Search for pleco and read up on them. But, I'm guessing you'll find that the consensus is that the 40g is far too small and you should just take it back ASAP. Get a bristlemouth or a clown pleco, or a couple of otos if you want the algae cleaning. As for the platies, I think the 5g will be too small. If you like the platies, get a male and a couple of females (total--not sure what you already have) for your 10g. Then get some sort of easy-care live plant that provides good cover like java moss, and you'll be able to raise some fish within your tank. Within a couple of months, you'll be close to your stocking limit!
