I had a female guppy (pregnant when I bought her) pop out a bunch of babies in my 5g, and as they have grown a little bit they have started munching on the snail eggs that are in there. The snails seem to be declining somewhat in population.

I went and bought three Assassin snails.....now I gotta wait and see.....

I use an empty sugar sprinkle jar. I wash it out really well and then put some food in it and sink it to the bottom of the tank. The snails crawl in through the holes to get to the food but the fish can't get it. Then you just pull the jar out, wash and replace as needed.
