I have 5 fish in my tank, I actually don't know what 3 of them are (that is bad I know) but the two that I do know are fantail goldfish. They have been in the tank for just over 3 weeks and today I noticed that they have itty bitty tiny white spots on all of their fins, also i'm not sure if it is just me but the water smells kind of funny - could be just me, i'm not sure.

The other 3 fish seem fine and don't show any signs of the spots, the two with the spots seem to be swimming like they are on speed or something, they are acting very strange. Any ideas as so what is wrong??

Maybe Ich. Someone else will tell you how to treat it. Also you shouldn't have any other kinds of fish with goldfish. What is your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? How big is your tank?

I'd treat the whole tank for ich if I was you. most common disease of new setups, and the symptoms you describe are consistant with it. there are lots of medicines for it in the stores, and lots of home remedies online. the only one i have ever had work was 'super ich plus' but it is very strong medicine that might kill your fish if they are small or of certain types (and since you don't know what they are, why take the chance). it would also stain the silicone and airline tubing in your tank green (it doesn't really look that bad, but just a heads-up). many people on here seem to have had success with adding salt and raising the temperature; i am sure someone else can respond with the specifics of this method if they have had success with it. if it were to work, this method has the obvious advantages of being cheap, not introducing you and your tank to strong chemicals, and not staining anything in your tank and not harming plants if you have any.

you can buy ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite test kits at your LFS... they are kind of expensive but a good investment if you plan on having fish for a while. the reason is that sometimes abnormal fish behaviors and some diseases can be directly caused by high levels of these in your tank, in which case the most effective treatment could simply be a large water change! this is especially likely if you didn't "cycle" your tank before adding fish.... read the cycle sticky if this is the case.

I am not trying to be mean because I know people do not like to hear this but your tank is not big enough for 2 goldfish or even one. The goldfish may be producing so much waste that it is making your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels high, which would make them more likely to develop a disease. Also if the 2 fish that you don't know about are not goldfish and are tropical they would need to be in a heated tank and goldfish like cold water. I am not sure about treating the tank with salt because of the goldfish in there and you need to raise the temp. Maybe someone else can help you.

that is kind of harsh, if they are still young goldfish i don't see why they wouldn't fit in a 10 gallon, although when they grow up they should ideally be in something larger. also the two goldfish that i used to have lived happily at room temperature in a goldfish bowl for like 5 years, and they were never once sick. and my tropical fish i have now also live at room temperature (which i keep at 79-80.) I'd like to know how big your goldfish are before deciding the problems are because of them, but yeah when they get bigger you will want to get a 20 gallon or something for them. also you should go online and try to figure out what the other 3 fish are, that is pretty important. if you post a pic of them i am sure people can tell you right away what they are.

A bowl or a small tank is not good for a goldfish. They will die because they produce to much waste and the water conditions will kill them. Believe me I tried keeping a small goldfish in a 15 gal and the nitrites and ammonia never went down.

Goldfish are supposed to live over 20 years not 5.

the reason they are not going to fit in the 10 gallon is that they will grow and get stunted and eventually live only a fraction of their lives, even if moved into a larger tank. The two gold fish in that bowl must of had a very bad life, did they ever get to grow up to a foot? That would be like a human living to 25 and saying that was enough time to live they must of had a good life. A 20 (or 30 is better) is maybe big enough for 1 goldfish with nothing else in the tank, a 40 or LARGER for the 2 and then the other 3 fish need a home, if we can find out what type of fish they are the 10 might work. also you will need to get those test kits and as for right now do water changes every few days just to make sure that your fish will survive.

Thanks guys, I'll ask the fish store what kind of fish they are when I go back, but it won't be until next week!! I'll just do a water change every day or two until then and maybe some miracle will happen and they will survive.

I've always kept goldfish in tanks this big, I'm not even sure if it is 10g, all I know is that I put 30 litres of water in it. It looks big enough to me, the two that I have are very small, but I do know they grow, they aren't comets they are little fantails and i've never seen those grow very big, my neighbour has a HUGE!! tank with some in it and they are only just bigger than mine and he's had them for over 8 years now.
