My golden mystery snail has been inside his shell and has not moved for maybe 4-5 days now. Has he died or is this type of behaviour normal for snails? Is their some sort of test I could do to see if he response? Any information would be helpful. Thanks

I thought I'd killed both of my blue mysteries, since one was eaten and I couldn't find the other. But yesterday I was watching the tank while I talked on the phone and he just crawled up the back tank wall as if nothing had happened!

yeah, if it's dead and gotten ripe, welcome to Gag City.

i've had my RH do that, too. it's just normal behavior. is part of mantle hanging out of the shell, or is it closed tight? is there a foul odor? if you snails start doing that it could be a sign that it's time for a WC. do a WC and see if he comes out, and maybe test the water.

Pull him out of the tank and take a wiff, you will definatly know if he's dead!! Dead snails have one of the worst smells ever!! Barf city!!

i agree... take him out and smell him.

I have had snails die without me knowing and i go to pick them up to check on them and just a nasty brown powder comes out of the shell and into the water.
that CANNOT be good for the water

Ok I just took him out of the tank and had to bring him pretty close to my nose before I smelt anything but when it got close it was pretty bad. Should the smell be noticable from a distance or is he dead?

check your PH, if it is low he may be hiding they need PH of 7 or higher.

It could also be poor water quality.

I tossed a few snails that did this before I knew any better. I thought they were dead but they were probably just protesting... :(
