I Want A Cool Fish.

I vote for loaches, specifically clowns...although you will eventually need a larger tank. At least 75-100 gallons. Clown loaches are my favorite though.

I would go with some colorful fish, Gold Gourami Fire fourami opaline gourami Lepord pleco or Zebra if you can find one, Chocolate catfish (very vocal) Clown loach (also very vocal)

Thats what I have and I had a realitor say wow,
I am planning on 2 tanks too, Brakish water (200 Gal) and a marine the 55gal mentioned before and all my freshies are going into a 75

Oscar are nice. i have 2 in an 80g. i also like eels, peacocks to be exact. they get like 16" but they can turn on a dime like a snake so if its too wide itll make due. convicts are cool too but if you have too many they may breed and kill each other due to their extremely territorial nature.
40g tank
4 black convicts
2 ice blue zebras
2 terquoise severiums
1 jack dempsey
1 oscar who just never grew... hes 2 years and 4" its strange...maybe ive discovered dwarf oscars?? i could make millions :P

80g
1 albino tiger oscar (Slovak)
1 tiger oscar (chi)
1 jack dempsey(danny boy)
2 terquiose severiums (Jat-Jay and Jon-Jon)
1 channel cat (secret squriell)
1 pleco (Goliathe)
PS i cant spell worth for my mothers life :/

Get an Oscar. They are like dogs inside an aquarium. Smart, tame, will eat out of your hand. Put on a good show hunting goldfish (for about 5 seconds...)

All around personable. But don't overstock with other fish... and nothing too small... If it fits in his mouth it will go in his mouth....
Oscars grow to large for a 55 gallon dimensions. The tank is only 13 inches deep and that will not be enough room for your fish. Impressing friends is the last reason to have a fish. Buy something you like that will fit in the tank that you got. Tank busters will out grow a 55 gallon tank, so its not a Big fish tank. If you want to get something impressive then buy your self a RES (red ear slider) and do daily water changes. This critter will impress your friends and girls alike. Or build your self a plant tank with lots of little fish. That always amazes the guest when they stop buy.

I'd say Bichir. Everyone who see's my tank is quite impressed by them. If your planning to keep only a 55 though go with what most stores call a dinosaur eel or cuvier bichir.

Wow those dinosaur eels are cool.
Do they get along with other fish?
